When considering the concept of “magic”, I’m drawn to the idea of spell-casting as a feminine endeavor, synonymous with both witchcraft and motherhood. Throughout history women have been the creators, the intuitive observers, and the sensitive perceivers within their societies. I have always thought of women as having a unique ability to quietly bring about change through a gentle force of will. After all, the ability to bring forth life feels magical by nature. The theme of portable magic is two-fold: each small, simple object depicted in the artwork possesses mysterious properties if you allow it to (a hazelnut is just a hazelnut, unless you believe its symbolism and choose to carry one in your pocket). The idea of portability is also significant in that we all carry the magic of manifestation within us — What’s more portable than your own flesh and blood vessel?
Each piece of art focuses on a specific earth magic spell with a specific intention, and was painted using a combination of coffee, tea, blood, rosemary oil, and gouache paint. Given the impermanence of these natural materials, some pieces have been updated to reduce signs of fading using gouache and colored pencil.
